Summer Road

How do you create a family home in a modest Victorian semi detached cottage? That’s right, pretty much double the footprint.

The challenge here was twofold. Firstly we needed to create lots space by extending across all floors in a way that would be granted planning permission and avoid the planners rejecting the scheme based on size, bulk or the subservience of the extensions. The second was how to avoid creating dark spaces and corridors at the same time as creating both family and private areas.

Planning permission was granted at the first time of asking. The staircase was moved to provide better connection across the floors. The ground floor layout enables the snug to the isolated while the kitchen, dining, family space wraps around an ‘L’ shape designed to be spacious and be flooded with light in the right places.
